About Community Filming Surveys
Community Filming Surveys are sometimes required by jurisdictions served by FilmLA, in specific circumstances and for certain filming requests. Surveys are a helpful tool in determining community support for more impactful filming activities. Obtaining advance feedback from those most directly impacted by filming allows FilmLA, area permit authorities, and productions to mitigate concerns leading to a more positive filming experience for all.
Unlike FilmLA’s Notification Service, Community Filming Surveys are not performed by FilmLA personnel. Whenever a survey is required, responsibility for going door-to-door to share filming plans and understand neighborhood concerns is handled directly by filmmaker representatives. Satisfactory completion of a Community Filming Survey, and a permit seeker’s reasonable attempt to address any legitimate community concerns, are required for permit release.
Each Filming Survey includes information about upcoming filming activity, including dates and hours of filming, area parking impacts, and other exceptional activities. Survey forms also contain contact information for FilmLA and the production company, to facilitate a dialogue between all parties before filming begins.
In most areas served by FilmLA, the Community Filming Survey is an information gathering tool, and not a request for permission to film.
Not all filming activity requires a filming survey; and for those shoots that do, community participation is strictly voluntary. FilmLA and local permit authorities use survey feedback to gauge neighborhood concerns with proposed activity. For additional survey requirements per city, please see the relevant Area Requirements articles in the FilmLA Knowledge Base.
Submitting Surveys to FilmLA
Once it has been determined that a filming survey is required, the FilmLA Production Coordinator must receive a copy of the survey form and company letter from the permit applicant to review and approve prior to survey distribution in the affected area. This step is to ensure the completeness and accuracy of the information shared by surveyors.
All Community Filming Survey forms need to be emailed for review and approval to logistics@filmla.com. Please ensure your packets for review are emailed by 4 p.m. on Fridays for planned canvassing on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
Permit applicants whose applications are "waiting for assignment" in MyFilmLA can proactively send surveys to logistics@filmla.com for review.
If your location is already assigned to a Production Coordinator in MyFilmLA, you must copy them on your email to Logistics.
Completed survey packets must also be sent to logistics@filmla.com and your assigned Production Coordinator.
